Basics of Tennis betting

Tennis BallsThere are many ways to bet on tennis. For the purposes of the more traditional types of tennis betting that we will examine first, all that truly matters is who wins and who loses. On that criteria alone, there is a vast number of options to explore when betting on the sport. To make things even more exciting, there are a number of point spread based betting variations that are becoming quite popular. We will look at each of these tennis betting models individually, both the new and the more traditional, and we’ll break down how they work, how they typically pay and things to consider when placing your bet.

Before going into detail about each type of bet, it is important to understand that with all tennis betting there are many different factors that can influence a betting line. These factors are considered by the bookmakers and should be considered by anyone hoping to consistently win at betting on the sport of tennis. How players match up historically, how they have performed individually on the variety of surfaces the game is played on, recent injuries or performance issues are all factors that should be considered when calculating your odds of winning any tennis bet. Now we will look at the different types of bets that are typically offered by online bookmakers.

There are two types of wager in tennis betting that are the most popular. One of them is betting on individual matchups. If you want to bet on an individual tennis match, the line for this type of bet is largely determined by the player ranking system, barring other considerations. For example, let’s say you have Roger Federer in a match against a player ranked at say 93rd in the world. It is extremely reasonable to assume that Roger Federer will win this match. Certainly the odds are overwhelmingly in his favor.Roger Federer

The line for this match would reflect those odds accordingly. If you were to place $500 on Federer to win the match, your payout for a Federer win might be around $10. On the other hand, a bet placed on the 93rd ranked player to win might yield 35 to 40 times the amount of your put if the player managed to pull off the unlikely upset. To clarify, let’s use an example. We’ll say the line for this match is listed as follows: Roger Federer -5000 / 93rd Ranked Player +3500 or Roger Federer 1.02 / 93rd ranked player 36. In this example a $500 bet on Federer would yield $10 on a win but a $100 bet on the 93rd ranked player would yield around $3,500.
Bet to Win

Another of the most popular wagers in tennis is “betting to win” or betting on the winner of a full event. The majority of this type of bet are placed during the Grand Slam events; the Australian, U.S. and French Opens, and Wimbledon. But since there are a large number of smaller events throughout a tennis season, there are ample opportunities to make this type of wager year-round. Depending on the odds on the player you choose, this model can be quite profitable.

Several additional variations of the “bet to win” model are also available. A “field bet” is one of those options and there are advantages and disadvantages to this type of bet. The advantage is that, as the term field implies, you are betting on a spread of players, any of whom can win for you. The disadvantage is that the payout is comparable to betting an individual match picking the favorite to win.

Another more lucrative variation of the “bet to win” model is betting futures on the four Grand Slam events. This can be a nice bet mainly because if you pick a player well ahead of the event and they happen to get hot just prior to the event you are betting on, you do not suffer the inevitable shift in the odds hurting your potential winning percentage.

Set Betting

If you want to abandon the traditional conventions of tennis betting and try something relatively new, one of the most popular “new” ways of betting on tennis matches is “set betting”. As the name implies, you bet on the outcome of a single match on the criteria of the set spread of the final score and win if your bet is correct. For example, you can lay odds, and reasonably so, that the final score of our example match above might be Federer 3-0. If that is indeed the final score, you win.

“Set betting” can be a very nice wager, as long as you know what you’re doing. If you search around many times you can find some very nice odds on a set bet. The reason for this is that there is a great deal of odds fluctuation as compared to the standard moneyline matches and many bookmakers have trouble faithfully determining odds that are favorable to them. This scenario truly benefits you when you can find it.

Handicap betting

There are also a number of handicap bets that can be found online. For example you could bet on a player in a match to win or lose at either +1.5 or -1.5 sets. Additionally, you could bet the same match at +7.5 games or -7.5 games. The same that is true of “set betting” can be said of handicap betting in tennis. The odds aren’t always that straightforward for the bookie to set forth and the handicap bet can become a fast friend to the savvy punter.
