Floyd Mayweather Jr vs. Shane Mosley
It’s about time that Floyd Mayweather Jr. finally fights one of the best welterweights in the world in Shane Mosley. Maywether has been dodging the best of the best in the 147lbs division. He has been criticized for taking on big money fights against popular but limited opponents. The self-proclaimed “cash cow” of boxing has avoided the likes of Antonio Margarito, Miguel Cotto and Paul Williams. This time around he couldn’t hide after the fallout of the proposed super fight between him and pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao.
Shane Mosley is always seeking out the best challenge out there. He was more than eager to fight Pacquiao and has already taken on the likes of Miguel Cotto, Oscar De La Hoya and Anotonio Margartio. Mosley became one of the most avoided boxers after he dismantled the seemingly indestructible Antonio Margarito in nine dominating rounds.
Mosley was slated to fight Andre Berto early in the year but Berto had personal matters to attend to. Mayweather also found himself without a dance partner after the super fight fallout. It was only natural that both parties came together and agreed to fight.
Shane Mosley
Upside Sugar Shane is the strongest fighter Mayweather has faced. Mosley also has all the confidence of the world after he destroyed then king of the welterweight division Antonio Margarito. Since Mayweather’s victory over Marquez, Mosley has been begging for a fight with Money May and he deservedly was given the opportunity.
Mosley has the speed to at least pressure Mayweather into a brawl. He has the ring smarts to make the ring smaller and cut off Mayweather’s defensive footwork. Even at age 38, Mosley is in tip-top shape thanks to trainer Nazeem Richardson. His size will be a problem for Mayweather. Possessing one of the fastest hands in boxing, Mosley will have to land effective jabs to disrupt Mayweather’s rhythm.
He will undoubtedly employ the same strategy De La Hoya used against Mayweather – jab, jab and more jabs. Hopefully, Mosley does this for the whole fight – De La Hoya jabbed perfectly for the first five rounds before suddenly stopping. Downside Mosley is highly susceptible of being outjabbed. Miguel Cotto was successful in beating Mosley to the punch in their fight.
Mosley has been inconsistent in his last three fights – he struggled heavily against Cotto and Ricardo Mayorga before looking spectacular against Margarito. The one-year lay-off might affect his timing and sharpness in the ring.
Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Upside
Mayweather is a tad faster than Mosley and may be able to beat him to the punch. His speed will also enable him to land the cleaner and crisper punches. Mosley has never faced a boxer with such defensive gifts.
If Mosley tries to cut the ring off and make it smaller, Mayweather will easily slip from punches and sneak in a clear shot.
In big money fights, Mayweather is a grizzled veteran. He thrives under the big lights and media blitz that accompanies big fights.
Downside
Mayweather needs probably five rounds before he figures out an opponent. If Mosley comes out the corner firing, Mayweather could find himself in a bit of a predicament. Money May has trouble with pressure fighters as shown in his first fight against Jose Luis Castillo. If Mosley applies pressure from start to finish, Mayweather will be in for a big night.
This fight will determine who’ll fight Pacquiao next. Mosley-Mayweather will be a closely contested match between to superb welterweights. It is simply difficult to predict who’ll win between Mosley and Mayweather.
